Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court has captured the world because he brings forward the fact that people are more concerned with their personal future than the world’s future. It seems like saying the auto mechanic attempted to rape my mother, daughter, sister or other women in my life, but he’s a great mechanics so I will ignore the attempted rape and keep taking my car to him to fix.
It is amazing to see the angry, belligerent, political, negative, arrogant attitude of Brett Kavanaugh as he attacked and yelled at Senators, and how he insulted, pounded his hands on the table, lied, screamed in the room, talked about the Clintons, called it search and destroy, and implied boys will be boys.
White male privilege has been on display with the rage of Brett Kavanaugh as he put forth his privilege to the court and to the world. Kavanaugh can be approved even though he is just like President Trump: self-righteous, retaliatory, arrogant, lack of dignity, womanizer, and talking down to people.
Kavanaugh has been joined by Lindsey Graham, Senator from South Carolina, who didn’t vote for Donald Trump but is now his running buddy, riding shotgun. I hear that he wants to be appointed to the Cabinet. I guess you have to pay the price and kiss the ring. Interestingly, he called Trump a racist during the campaign. What has changed?
Graham, like Kavanaugh, has been wagging his finger in the face of Democrats, pretending to be outraged about something. He recently said he was a single white male as he promoted Kavanaugh. He supported the move to keep Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, for the Supreme Court off the Court. Merrick Garland was not even given a hearing.
When I heard Senator Jeff Flake from Arizona say that if he was running for re-election he could not have asked for a pause in the confirmation hearings of Brett Kavanaugh. I was disappointed because he didn’t do what he did for the people he represents. He did it for his own future. Unlike his former partner, the late Senator John McCain who defended then Senator and candidate for President Barack Obama because it was the right thing to do, Flake proved that he is a coward, self-protective, and not a people person.
When I reflect further on this, Flake is a Conservative Republican which means that he was anti–Affirmative Action and anti-Black progress. The real deal here is that everybody has to have a selfish streak in their attitude as long as it doesn’t harm others. Conservatives also tend to agree that everybody doesn’t need to vote or be an American. They are anti-immigration, except when they need cheap labor.
Conservatives believes that black and brown youths don’t deserve a seat in professional schools. It’s OK for them to be a musician, or actor, or preacher, but they don’t deserve to be a president or professor. Conservatives can go to a black event to be entertained, just as they did when there were minstrel shows to entertain them, but not as owners, managers or corporate leaders.
I smile quietly when I see a white person who knows that there needs to be equality of opportunity for a job or a seat in a professional school or business. Families like the Kennedys, i.e . John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Anthony Portantino, Bill Bogaard, Robin Selzer, and Joe Biden who advertise in Black media knowing that without the advertisement, it’s hard to survive.
Someone said that they felt sorry for Kavanaugh because Senator Dianne Feinstein waited ten days before reporting the facts of the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford against Kavanaugh, spending ten days of investigation. That’s nothing when you compare it to a life of pain after rape or denied of an opportunity such as not being admitted to a school because of the color of your skin.
To Jeff Flake, Dr. King taught the world that it’s not what you do when the world is watching, but what will you do when no one is watching? That defines who you are.
