LOS ANGELES, CA RollUp, RiseUp, ReignUp for the Biddy Mason Legacy: An Empowered 19th Century Millennial is the theme for the 5th Annual “A CALL FOR BOLDNESS” Biddy Mason Unsung Shero Legacy Celebration (Celebration). The Celebration is Saturday, August 10, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Biddy Mason Memorial Park, 333 S. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA. The Women’s Group of Greater Los Angeles County (WGGLAC) in collaboration with Dr. Kathye Jenkins, Founder/President of the Cynthia Perry Ray Foundation (CPRF), a 501(c)(3) non-proﬁt organization will host its signature event to commemorate Biddy Mason’s 201st birthday and legacy.
Hon. Aja Brown, Mayor of the City of Compton is the Honorary Chair of the 2019 Celebration Committee. Other Celebration Honorary Committee members are: Valerie Alleyne, Founder/President, U Care; Crystal Hayes Hill, Esq., Founder/President, My Legal Team; Victoria Williams; D’Andre Holland; April (Simply Wholesome) and Trina Roberts; Many of today’s millennials mirror the character of Biddy Mason’s ambition, conﬁdence, achievement-oriented, unafraid to question authority and serve the community. Biddy Mason was a 30 years old millennial when she made her historic 2,000 miles walk from Mississippi to California. She was the property of slave owners Robert Smith and Rebecca Dorn Smith. However, she won her freedom after petitioning the court. Biddy invested her mid-wife earnings in downtown Los Angeles real estate and became the ﬁrst wealthiest Black American woman in Los Angeles. The First African Methodist Episcopal Church, Los Angeles was founded in her home. Ms. Biddy Mason advocated for the poor and incarcerated population. The 2019 Celebration unsung millennial sheroes honorees of African descent are dynamic. They have managed their challenges with bold determination to accomplish their entrepreneurial goals and disrupt the status quo of addressing the social and economic equities of the Los Angeles County community. Hon., Jan Perry (ret.), Awards Presenter will acknowledge the following Unsung Sheroes: Melissa Beckford, Charity Chandler Cole, Brandi Coleman, Rocsil Frank, Makiah Green, Danielle King, Raven Morgan, Ashley Perkins, Melissa Phillips, Krystal Rhaburn, Ife Sangode, Zaneta Smith, Akilah Wallace, and Michelle Washington Roquemore.
