Super Bowl LIII The Greatest Game in the World!
I grew up in a small town in Texas. As I was growing up, Christmas Day was the most exciting one of our lives. We could not wait for it to arrive, and when it did, we really enjoyed ourselves. Then, we knew, that we would have to wait another long year before it happened again. We learned to live with that.
Now a football game has grown from relative obscurity to become the most watched event in the entire world. I saw the first of these games in the Los Angeles Coliseum. At that time, it was just called a championship game, and the contest was between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. The price of the ticket was $10.00 for this event, which would have normally cost just $5.00. Easy come, easy go. I am not certain, but I do not think that the game was televised.
The first touchdown was scored by former USC great Mike Garrett, who was playing for the Chiefs. However, the irresistible Green Bay Packers, led by the indomitable Vince Lombardi, stormed back to win the game.
The game on Sunday, in Atlanta, will be the 53rd in this series. It will be watched all over the world, and translated into all major languages. It will be seen by many millions of people, who will bet billions of dollars, Euros, Francs, et al on it. Many people feel a compulsion to bet on the outcome, and when it is over, some will be happy and others will be sad.
Some of the best news about this contest is that Gladys Knight will sing the National Anthem. It has been my honor and pleasure to see and hear her in person, along with the indefatigable Pips. She sang for about 90 minutes, and all the while, the Pips did their wonderfully synchronized Aerobics. During her show, she left the stage three times in order to make costume changes. While she was gone, the Pips just kept on Pippin, which they did for 90 consecutive minutes. Amazing!.
As you already know, the game will be between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. So, what we have is age and experience versus youth and ambition. Someone has to win, and someone has to lose. Over the years, I have made many accurate predictions. For example, I was one of the few writers to predict that the Dallas Cowboys would defeat the more experienced Buffalo Bills, in a long ago Super Bowl contest.
However, I no longer have that kind of confidence in myself, so I consulted with a higher authority, my brother Neal. It just turns out that he is living in Atlanta, which may or may not, make any difference. However, he was quite firm in his prediction, and he said “The Rams will win”.
I do agree with his prediction, since I strongly expect that the Rams will be beginning a dynasty of their own. They have a great team, a brilliant young coach, who is fearless in tough situations. Also, they have the classiest uniforms of any team in the NFL. They were the first team to have a helmet logo. One of their players was an artist, and he voluntarily made the logo back in the year 1951.
There is one potential fly in the ointment, and that is star running back Todd Gurley. He was injured a few games ago, and since that time he has been unable to play as well as he did before. While he was injured, the Rams added running back C. J. Alexander, and his wonderful play has exceeded everyone’s expectations. So, I am joining with Neal in predicting that the Los Angeles Rams will be the Super Bowl Champions of the Year 2019!
