Donald Trump as the so – called leader of the world’s most successful country is facing pressing problems in the areas of tax reform, Puerto Rico, Health Care, and a potential war with North Korea. But with all these national issues, this President is only talking about firing Black football players in the National Football League and attacking Stephen Curry of the National Basketball Association.
I was going to start this column with a question about since when did politicians begin to pick fights with the Black Community by fighting with its entertainers and Athletes? Then as I began, others began to rush into my mind. Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali, John Carlos and Jesse Owens.
And now, we come to today where Colin Kaepernick exercised his First Amendment rights to protest and refused to stand for the American opening ceremony of football games. Now this talented quarterback can’t get hired, and more and more athletes and Americans in general are standing and kneeling with Kaepernick. Stevie Wonder took both knees to support him and oppose the violence against young Black men by Police with impunity.
At least one owner stood with his arms linked with the players on his team. The players organizations are supportive but the President of the United States says the owners should fi re the “Sons of Bitches” who refuse to stand to honor the flag and show they are patriots.
First of all by calling them them sons of Bitches, he has played the dozens talking about their mothers. That is a big no no.
Then picking on Stephen Curry who said he wasn’t going to attend the White House reception that champions traditionally do, the President now claims he didn’t invite him.
The President then doubled down on the Black footballers and basketballers. He displays an amount of racism when he suggested the owners should fire them. 70% of professional ball players are African American so who is he talking to, Black ball players and their mama’s? Why can’t he just leave us alone? He says he is President to all the people and uniting us in unity, yet he has attacked women, gays, Mexicans, judges, the whole judicial system, now, Black ball players and their mothers.
Someone needs to tell this President that Slavery has been over since 1863 and he is not a king with all powers. Therefore, telling players how they are suppose to act and when to stand has no power over the ball players. What does have power is the Constitution and the players know their rights, apparently better than this 45th President.
This administration started with a racist base asking to build a wall between Mexico and the United States and declaring to keep people from predominately Muslim countries and out of the United States without special governmental permission.
Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel opposes this President’s proposed health care bill because of Kimmel’s son’s illness. All health care professional organizations from the American Heart Association to the American Cancer Association and the American Medical Association oppose his health care bill, but he doesn’t seem to care. He says that sooner or later it will pass and eliminate an estimated 22 million people from having health care coverage of any kind. His attitude seems to be, “So what?”
What is the protest about? It is about Police brutality and mistreatment of young Black men and women by the police.
