Sports Watching and Wondering

Black news from Pasadena - Sports - Byron Scott, Josh Shaw and moreByron Scott - An Elite Coach with an Impossible Job!

I am very familiar with both the playing and coaching careers of Byron Scott. He was a calm, steady player, who was an integral part of the Lakers Showtime Dynasty. Then, after working as an Assistant Coach in the NBA, he became the Head Coach of the New Jersey Nets. At that time, they were the East Coast Equivalent of the Los Angeles Clippers. Big time losers.

Under his leadership, the team improved, and battled the Kobe-Shaq Lakers in two consecutive NBA Championship Series. They did not win either of these, but the highly talented Lakers had to fight for their lives. The only player on that team that anyone will remember is Jason Kidd.

Scott almost got lucky, when he was hired to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers. At that time LeBron James was still a member of that team, and no one knew, or even suspected, that he would leave to join the Miami Heat. If he had chosen to stay in Cleveland with Scott, I am convinced that they would have one several NBA Championships by now.

In my opinion, the Cavaliers had the talent to be NBA champions. What they lacked, at that time, was coaching leadership. Mike Brown was the head coach of the team, and he was a good one, but he had not learned how to close the deal. He knew the X's and O's as well as anyone, but he had not been through the fire of championship competition. His Cavaliers had a 3-2 game lead in their Championship Series with the Boston Celtics, who were then being coached by current Clipper Head Coach, Doc Rivers.
