The Big Two! -Trojans-Bruins!
This is kind of like it used to be. What has changed is that the Chargers are now in Los Angeles. There was a time when the entire world cared about the game between the Bruins and the Trojans. In that era, both teams in the Coliseum on alternate Saturdays.
Although the Coliseum is located next to USC, it alternated as the home field for the Bruins and the Trojans. This was a satisfactory arrangement, and it lasted for a number of years. Then, the people who run the Coliseum were attempting to lure the Raiders to stay in Los Angeles. Therefore, they propose to make some changes in the Coliseum to accommodate them.
Apparently, these changes were being discussed without any input from UCLA, and this oversight hurt their feelings. So, they began to play all of their games in the Rose Bowl, which heretofore had been available only for Bowl Games or Super Bowl Games. Oh, I should mention that the Chargers were playing in San Diego, where they appeared to be both happy and prosperous.
Reflecting on that era, I think that it is safe to say that most of the time the Trojans had the most exciting teams, and the most glamorous athletes. They also have a mascot, a wonderful white horse named Traveler, who is nearly as famous as the team. When the Trojans score a touchdown, Traveler will prance around the football field, to the utter delight of the Trojan Faithful.
This year, both the Bruins and the Trojans have successful and exciting teams. When they finally meet in the Coliseum this year, the eyes of sporting fans all over the world will be trained on them. The spirits of present and past Bruins and Trojans will also be in the Coliseum.
I don’t think that the Bruins ever had a Mascot. However, they had something else that was quite unique. In the game that they had, especially in the Coliseum, they would serpentine from the huddle to the line of scrimmage. I do not know how to describe this, because I think that you have to see it in order to understand and to appreciate it. However, I never saw any other team do what they did, and when they broke the huddle that way, their fans became ecstatic.
I no longer watch all of the UCLA games, so I do not know if there use the serpentine. If they don’t, then they are missing an exciting part of their heritage. As for myself, I cannot possibly imagine watching the Trojans without Traveler.
If the present trend continues, then this year’s game between the Bruins in the Trojans will be must see for the majority of college football fans. Their quarterback, Josh Rosen, may be the best pure pastor in college football today. However, he does not have much run support, and so the Trojans are likely to win the game between the two of them. USC not only has Sam Darnald, a world-class quarterback, they also have star running backs, Ronald Jones and Stephen Carr. Shades of Mike Garrett, Marcus Allen, Charles White, Reggie Bush, et al.
The Texas Longhorns will be playing the Trojans this Saturday at the Coliseum. This is the team that broke many hearts by beating the Trojans for the College Football Championship, in the Rose Bowl in the year 2006. The Trojans had Reggie Bush, he played a wonderful game. However, the Longhorns had a star of their own, and his name was Vince Young. He was practically unstoppable, and he led his team to a victory, which broke the hearts of the Trojan Faithful. I predict that the Trojans will get some retribution.
