College basketball fans can barely wait until Friday. That is when UCLA will meet Kentucky in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen Regional at Memphis, Tennessee. The Bruins have a record of 31-4, and they will match up against Second-seeded Kentucky, whose record is 31-5. This
is the second meeting of this season between the Bruins and the Wildcats. The first one was a win by the Bruins by a score of 97-92. Kentucky is a slight favorite in this match.
Steve Alford, UCLA’s head basketball coach, will likely be leaving the Bruins after this season. Indiana University, his old school, has just fired their basketball coach. In California, the head basketball coach is just a head basketball coach. However, in Indiana the head basketball coach is a God! While Alford was a student there, he played on the Indiana NCAA championship team, which was coached by the legendary Bob Knight. So, I strongly suspect that he will soon be back home again, in Indiana The Trojans had an interesting week. Began by looking scary for them, as they fell behind Providence by 17 points. This was like a movie that I had seen before. However, this time was different, since the Trojans rallied and won the game by a score of 75 to 71.
Then they had to meet the dreaded, six ranked Baylor. The teams played a hard-fought exciting game regrettably, when it was over, Baylor had prevailed. While that was disappointing, everyone with whom I have spoken to was favorably impressed with the Trojans. They are young, but they are very good team. They are fundamentally sound, and they obviously enjoyed playing the game. They played many of their games in USC’s Galen Center, before thousands of empty seats. So, this NCAA Tournament was kind of a coming out party for the team.
If the NBA Championship Series started today, the Los Angeles Clippers would face the Utah Jazz and the game would be played in Salt Lake City. So, the Clippers at 42-29 would like to at least take the fourth spot from the Jazz, whose current record is 43-28, since this would also give them the home-court advantage.
There are a few teams in the NBA that seem to want Carmelo Anthony on their team. He is one of the best pure shooters in the NBA. He is playing for Phil Jackson’s New York Knicks, whose record is a pitiful 27-43. When the Knicks were able to obtain Anthony in a trade, they thought that they would have a winning team, but they were wrong. I am not saying that it is Anthony’s fault, but the teams that he plays for don’t seem to do very well so, he and Jackson have taken a lot of heat in New York.
You can expect that the Lakers will make at least one major trade before the start of the next season. I do not have any idea of whom they will bring in, but I am certain that it will be an important player. The Lakers are on the way back to the top.
