One month after a federal settlement awarded one million dollars in the Pasadena McDade shooting case, a video of an LAPD officer has been shown on a video kicking a Latino woman. The kicking occurred in a Van Nuys jail holding cell. His partner joined in the abusive force actions. In another case of excessive force, an African American woman was beaten by a Highway patrolman on the side of a highway.

When my wife and I visited Detroit, Michigan some months ago for a former Pastor's wife's memorial services, we were not aware of the real economic condition of Detroit's Black community. We now know than for young entrepreneurial students and practitioners, Detroit provides opportunities galore.

As America nears the end of the Obama years, there are those who just won't let go of their hatred of him. In my opinion, their hatred of him is based solely on his race and his African American heritage. The Tea Party haters have taken the lead in demonstrating hate against Obama. One big hatred is by governors of states who refuse federal dollars to help the citizens in their states get free health care through Medicaid for the underprivileged. It's hard to keep track of the laws that are anti-Obama but approximately one half of the states are saying no to free federal dollars for health care under Medicaid.

The week began with my wife and I being honored by the Altadena NAACP with a Lifetime Achievement award. To the NAACP, our heartfelt thank you for noticing our work. In describing our work the NAACP used the words inspire, impact, influence and benefit the community, others, and each other. To that I can only say, I hope so. We have certainly worked hard to get here in what is our 25th year of publishing the Journal and our 52nd year of marriage, as of June 30, 2014. That is our real lifetime achievement. For that I say, thank you Miss Ruthie. Together we say, congratulations to Paul and Juanita DeVaughn on their receipt of the Community Service award for years of service they have given to the community. They have been married since 1950, a few more (12) years longer than Miss Ruthie and I.

A few months ago, I settled a case for $200,000 where the LA County Sheriff burned a young man and arrested him for alleged battery on the deputies. For over thirty years, I have been suing the police for abuse of citizens. In 1968, the year I graduated from college, I was one of those young Black men who was beat-up by the police. That was before suing the police was the thing to do, and I was just glad to be alive, and not going to jail, and was able to put the event behind me.
