A CALL FOR BLACK UNITY!

I am a mother of a 17-year old Black male. I religiously read The Journal's weekly editorial. The last few editorials regarding police abuse of citizens of our community have been frightening.

I recently reviewed a scholarship application that asked the question of whether the student had been convicted of a crime. And, it immediately came to mind the negative future my son could possibly encounter were he to be stopped unjustly and arrested by racist police officers. The thought was beyond frightening, which led to my call to Joe Hopkins, editor of the Pasadena Journal, to voice my concern of this issue and to propose community involvement to end police injustice in our community. For too long we as blacks have been viewed as suspects in the eyes of white police officers. We must come together now to unite for a common purpose of ensuring our safety and that of our children. It is our responsibility to protect our children and allow them opportunities of bright futures. Now we also have the task of trying to protect them from criminal labeling. As Marcus Garvey stated almost 100 years ago, unity is the solution to many of our problems as African-Americans. So let's come together as African-Americans to formulate ideas to overcome the police injustice that's plaguing our community. UNITY IS MIGHTY. This is our community; let's do our part to make it safe!

If you would like to participate in an informal meeting in a few weeks, please contact the Journal at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Our African-American teenagers and young adults are encouraged to get involved as well so that, as our future leaders, they can give their valuable input, and perhaps even lead this cause.
