Renatta Cooper Re-Elected President of the PUSD Board of Education
The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Education voted 4-2 to re-elect Renatta Cooper to a third term as its president at its regular board meeting on May 14, 2013.
"I am honored to be selected for a third year as this board's president and look forward to working with my colleagues for the academic achievement of all children in the district," said Cooper. "I would also like to discuss the possibility of adding a president-elect to work collaboratively for our students."
Since her election to the board in 2007, Cooper has focused on early childhood education, closing the achievement gap between groups of students, increasing the proficiency English language learners and a stronger engagement of parents and the community. An expert on early childhood education, Cooper formerly taught graduate-level child development programs at Pacific Oaks College and has been a member of the First 5 Los Angeles Board of Commissioners. She was first elected President of the PUSD Board of Education in 2011.
Rep. Schiff Statement on IRS Selective Enforcement Actions

Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a senior member of the Intelligence Committee, issued the following statement in response to allegations that the IRS has engaged in the targeted scrutiny of certain tax-exempt 501(c)4 social welfare groups:
"The Internal Revenue Service must enforce the tax code in a neutral and nonpartisan way. Any politicization of tax enforcement is abhorrent and should be viewed as a grave offense. These allegations must be investigated to the fullest extent and dealt with appropriately.
"I first raised the issue of selective enforcement by the IRS during the Bush Administration, when the agency audited All Saints Episcopal Church of Pasadena based on the content of a particular church service. After a former pastor gave an anti-Iraq War sermon, All Saints became the target of an aggressive IRS investigation in which the church's tax-exempt status was threatened. At the time, I could find only one Republican colleague, Rep. Walter Jones, that would join me in calling for an investigation. The IRS targeting of certain organizations on the basis of their ideology is anathema, deeply chilling to free speech and cannot be tolerated.
Statement of Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown on Governor Brown's May Revision
Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Cheryl R. Brown (D-San Bernardino) issued the following statement today in response to Governor Jerry Brown's May Revision:
"I look forward to working with my colleagues to review Governor Brown's May Budget Revision proposal. I am very pleased to see that the budget calls for 56 new positions to help the Secretary of State eliminate the backlog and red tape of business filings. This will be very helpful for small businesses to stimulate economic growth and jobs for our region. In addition, I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure his proposal to reshape the Enterprise Zone Program and the New Jobs Hiring Credit is beneficial for the growth of businesses and jobs in my cities.
