The Journal is publishing it’s twenty ninth year, having been created by Joe and Ruthie Hopkins in 1989. The Journal was created in response to the fact that during that time, the Pasadena area no longer had a Black focused newspaper or media of any kind to tell our story and highlight the victories and contributions of Black Pasadenans.
In the years we have been in existence, we have tried to give back to the community from the blessings we have received from a successful law practice.
This weekend the Journal will honor six women who have made contributions to the community in a number of ways. This years’ Women of Achievement marks our ninth year presenting the honor at a breakfast.

Each year we try to recognize men in the community who have made positive contributions to the community. This year we will make the attempt to do the same along with our 2017 honorees:Berlinda Brown, Char Bland, Brenda Harvey Williams, Joann Forte’-Wormely, Cheryl Moody and Beverly Bogar.
Over the years we have also produced a Report on the State Of Black Pasadena, a Black Expo, a Marketplace, a Youth Marketplace, Juneteenth, a bus tour of Historical Black Pasadena (2008) and we celebrated twenty years of service with a luncheon at the Tournament House .
We have tried to serve this community well and give back for the blessings God has provided us. Someone said that service is the rent we pay for being on earth. Hopefully, we are current on our rent payments. We are thankful to God for fifty plus years together, three great sons, seven wonderful grandchildren and one absolutely beautiful great grand daughter. Events like what happened this week in San Bernadino and the loss of a child by a local pastor leave us to say, Thank God, again and again .
