Leave A Legacy

Black news from Pasadena - Lifestyle - Leaving a legacyAnyone who attended The Pasadena Journal's Women of Achievement Awards Breakfast earlier this month would tell you that it was very inspiring and special. Eight Women of God from our local churches were honored for their service to God, to their church and to the community. The guest speaker, Jewel Diamond Taylor, wowed the crowd with her enthusiasm and pearls of wisdom. One of the things she shared was that all women should make sure they "live, love, learn and leave a legacy."

At Friendship Baptist we are often reminded that "we are blessed to be a blessing." Leaving a legacy can bless others for generations. Webster's dictionary defines the word "legacy" as "a gift by will, especially of money or other personal property." It is further defined as "something transmitted by or received from an ancestor . . . ".  Legacy refers to an inheritance that can come in many forms. It can be an inheritance of financial assets, of success, of a good reputation, etc.

When you leave a positive legacy you blaze a trail, open a door, lay a foundation, and pave a path so that others may benefit from your wisdom, success, and accomplishments. Many have left a legacy for their family by taking care of business and handling their responsibilities, even until the end. Making sure your final affairs are in order, including your funeral arrangements, is a gift to those you love.

We recently handled the services of Mrs. Alberta Witt. She passed away in Mississippi and was shipped back to Pasadena to have the services she had pre-planned for, years ago. Her family was thankful that she cared enough to take care of this business well in advance. When she passed last month, all of the decisions were already made. Mrs. Witt's family set the date and prepared to celebrate a life well lived. She was always admired for raising 10 children and for setting an example by working hard and by giving.

Mrs. Witt left a legacy of love, faith and of handling her affairs. What legacy will you leave?
