Sports Watching and Wondering

Black news from Pasadena - Sports - Commentary on UCLA, USC, the Dodgers, Kevin Sumlin and moreLet the Games Begin!

There simply is not any way for a sports fan to get through the next week. Major League Baseball Playoffs have started. In addition, both UCLA and USC will be playing football this weekend. When you throw in a few games from the NFL, you can see that the whole thing is simply overwhelming.

Being a sports fan in Southern California is like going to eat at Hometown Buffet. There simply is so much good stuff that you do not know where to begin, and once you have, you do not know when to stop. In either case, I promise to discipline myself. However, I have found that it's easier to say that than to actually do it. Like many of you, I simply cannot get enough of a good thing.

So, here we go:

UCLA will play Utah at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. This is a game that the Bruins should win easily. They seem to get stronger every week, and Brett Hundley is playing well, despite having an injured elbow. The team has also found a secret weapon in Ishmael Adams. He is a threat to return every kickoff, kick, or interception for a touchdown.

USC will meet the Arizona State Sun Devils at the Coliseum. This Game is a question mark for both teams. The Trojans have not been consistent in their play, and last week they were penalized 14 times. Whenever that happens, the team knows that it is flirting with disaster. If the Trojans really want to become great again, they will simply have to exercise more discipline in all phases of the games.

The Dodgers will play their first playoff game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday Afternoon at Dodger Stadium. They have Clayton Kershaw, the best pitcher in baseball, and he is ready to go. However, the Cardinals are always tough, so this figures to be a hard-fought series. The Dodgers are little bit loosey-goosey with their fundamentals, and their team discipline. They do not always play well when they are under a lot of pressure, and their manager Don Mattingly does not always make good decisions. So, these games should be exciting, and the Dodgers should come away with a win.
