Fifth Annual 50 Fabulous Women

Black news from Pasadena - News - THE Magazine's Annual 50 Fabulous Women 2013STEVE TOBIA and THE MAGAZINE Sponsored it's fifth annual 50 Fabulous Women on June 4th at the Pasadena Museum of History.

This year's honorees, as in the past included 50 women achievers from the Pasadena Foothills area. Tobia is to be complimented for choosing and highlighting a group of women whose individual and combined stories tells of women from all walks of life. There is a virtual gathering of giants from the worlds of business, law, publishing, politics and leadership, in general.

The Museum of History was a particularly appropriate setting for this year's event with its' theme, "Celebrating Women Throughout The Years."

Turning Tragedy into Hope: The Brandon Jackson Memorial Scholarship

Black news from Pasadena - News - Annual Brandon Jackson basketball fund raiser and scholarshipsYoung people ranging from age seven through high school are teaming up to become part of something bigger than basketball. They're ready to take part in a sports tournament that raises scholarship money for students with college dreams.

The Third Annual Brandon Jackson Basketball Shoot Out is set for Saturday, June 22 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at John Muir High School in Pasadena.

Brandon Jackson died two years ago. He was gunned down on a street in Altadena on February 12, 2011. He had just turned 18. The crime remains unsolved. The First Presbyterian Church of Altadena formed "Stepping Into the Light Outreach" after Jackson's death. The organization believes education changes lives and can help stop violence in the Pasadena/Altadena community.

The church's outreach ministry led to the Brandon Jackson basketball tournament and scholarships in his name. $13, 500 in scholarships were awarded to six area young people who entered college during 2011 and 2012, according to the organization's website.

Public Tours to Open at America's Stadium

Behind-the-Scenes Tours of the Rose Bowl Stadium Will Give Fans an Exclusive Look at the Revitalization of the Iconic and Historic Pasadena Landmark

Black news from Pasadena - News - Rose Bowl Stadium tours for the first time in historyPasadena, CA – Beginning June 22, fans will have the opportunity to tour the National Historic Landmark Rose Bowl Stadium and relive history while walking through the same tunnels and along the same hallowed grounds which some of sports' greatest players and teams have graced.

"There's no shortage of legendary moments at the stadium," said General Manager Darryl Dunn. "From the locker rooms to the post-game interview room; the newly renovated premium-seating pavilion, the working press boxes and the playing field itself, the stadium is a treasure trove of memorable games, big plays and defining careers."

For the first time in the facility's 90-year history, the Rose Bowl Stadium will conduct guided tours and provide exclusive access to locations rarely available to the public.

Public Invited to Information Meeting . . .

. . . On Process to Update General Plan

Black news from Pasadena - News - Pasadena General Plan meeting for publicPasadena, CA —The public is invited to two information meetings in June to learn about the process for updating the City's draft General Plan Land Use and Mobility Elements, the direction given to staff by the City Council and the overall environmental review process.

The meetings scheduled in June will be held at:

  • 9:00 a.m., Saturday, June 15, at Pasadena City College's Circadian Room, Building CC, 1570 E. Colorado Blvd. Park in Lot 3 off South Hill Avenue.
  • 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 27, at Pasadena Presbyterian Church's Gamble Lounge, 585 E. Colorado Blvd. Free parking is available on the north side of East Union Street.

City staff will provide the same in-depth presentation at both meetings, including information about the direction given by the City Council to study changes to the General Plan; what an environmental impact report (EIR) typically includes; information on how a General Plan EIR is different from other EIRs, and future opportunities for public comment and participation during the EIR process.
