Hillsides Aims to Collect 170 Backpacks for New School Year

Black news from Pasadena - Community News - Hillsides backpack driveThe Pasadena-headquartered charity Hillsides has begun its annual school supply donation drive to help children and youth in need prepare for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year.

Hillsides' goal is to put together 170 backpacks filled with school supplies for 90 elementary school students, 30 middle schoolers, and 50 high school students. The cost of the backpacks are $40, $50, and $60 respectively. The items packaged inside vary by grade level, and range from binders and pencils to calculators and dictionaries.

Pasadena, CA - The Pasadena-headquartered charity Hillsides has received a $5,000 donation from the Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association. John Symes, owner of Symes Automotive Group and a member of the Association's board of directors, presented the check to Hillsides Chief Executive Officer Joseph M. Costa at the Symes Toyota dealership.

Women At Work Receives Founders Grant!

Black news from Pasadena - Community News - Women At Work job resource newsWomen At Work announced that an additional $34,000 has been raised towards a $50,000 Women At Work Founders Challenge grant. These funds will help provide many services to job seekers, both women and men, and to job providers in the San Gabriel Valley, Crescenta Valley and northeast Los Angeles. "It is exciting to see the community support for our agency, especially since this is Women At Work's 35th year. We are so grateful to everyone who gave generously, and who held special events so that people could learn about our important work," said Uma Shrivastava, President of the Board of Directors.

"We are gratified that the community believes so strongly in our mission," said Camille Levee, Executive Director of the organization. "This grant and the additional donations the agency received will help our agency continue to meet the challenges of the current volatile economy."
