I confronted, Mike, owner of the market, with this greeting “Is it true that you guys are closing the market.” I received no verbal answer, only a tear in his eyes. At this point, I couldn’t help but to hug and cry along with him. This is a painful moment seeing the familiar little business leave our community.
This historical landmark, has feed many “peoples”, in this community, long before I arrived and made Pasadena my home away from home in 1960.
Back in the day, there was nowhere else to get your “greens, bacon with the rind, and all the fat back,” that you needed. I even seen guys come in and get a slice of Bolona (sic) and cheese to make one sandwich- where else? The mama and papa would always put that little extra on and in your package.
During my singlehood, going to college, and raising a daughter, I couldn’t wait to get those variety “meat packages” to last two weeks to feed my household.
I just wanted to alert the community, at this time, to please join in sending or taking a card to the Chan Family for their long genuine love of this community for so many years.
