The New Jim Crow
Mar.23.2011 06.30PM

Michelle Alexander will discuss her new book 'The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness www.newjimcrow.com' in which she argues that racial discrimination in the United States has been redesigned following the Civil Rights Movement's gains, with implicit but legalized and devastating social consequences.

Alexander shows that by targeting black men through the War on Drugs and decimating communities of color, the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control. The old forms of discrimination in employment, housing, education and public benefits; denial of the right to vote and exclusion from jury service are suddenly legal once your are labeled a felon.

Ms. Alexander is currently on the law faculty at Ohio State University, former Director of Stanford's Law Civil Rights Clinic, clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackman and 2011 winner of the NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Literary Work, Non-Fiction.

The event is Wednesday, March 23rd at 6:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Central Library Auditorium, location 285 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena 91101.
