~ Save the Date ~
The Journal will sponsor a Holiday Marketplace in Hopkins' Village, on November 29, 2014, during the Thanksgiving weekend. The event will be held as a celebration of twenty-five years of publishing in this community. It will also provide an opportunity for local businesses, artists, authors, and organizations to showcase their business or service.
1n 2002, we sponsored our first Marketplace. Since that time, we have sponsored other marketplaces including a Spring Marketplace and a Youth Marketplace with young people under the age of 18. Many of our past participants found the experience rewarding and inspirational. In our Youth Marketplace, Lance Arnold who was a nine year old cookie vendor, moved on and has graduated from Morehouse College.
Also, Shannon Malone a local educator wrote a letter to us regarding her two daughters' experience at the Youth Marketplace some years ago. The sisters sold gourmet brownies at the marketplace. They were 4 and 6 years old. She stated, years later, how they utilized the experience as evidence in their application to local colleges and universities. Her eldest daughter participated in an entrepreneurship program in 2012 at the University of Southern California and listed the Marketplace experience as a blessing.
Ms. Malone was principal of Cleveland Elementary School, in Pasadena, at the time she wrote the letter chronicling her daughters' experiences. What I recall most about Ms. Malone's letter regarding her daughters, and Lance Arnold's statement, were the value they gained for themselves from their participation. Such an unforgettable experience can, indeed, influence the course of a person's life.
This year, we invite people of all ages, including young people, to join with us to make this a joyous celebration and allow for the holiday spirit and keep some of the money in the community. We look forward to city departments' participation to showcase their services to the community. We invite businesses, government departments, public service organizations, private schools, and public safety organizations such as the Fire Department and the Police Department to also purchase a booth. Your participation can help make this a positive experience involving all the community. It can certainly be a recruitment and educational opportunity.
