Rural in the Digital Age - Lu Nelsen Goes to Washington

The internet is such a powerful tool in modern life, it's hard for a lot of people to imagine going through their daily routine without using it in some capacity. But for some people in rural communities, accessing the internet isn't as easy as just connecting to the wifi network.

I recently had the chance to fly to Washington D.C. along with other rural advocates to talk about net neutrality and broadband access in rural areas. We shared stories that we heard from rural folks across the country with representatives and regulators, and discussed how we could improve service to rural communities.



L.A. County Registrar of Voters Partners with L.A. Media Outlets and Orange County to Get Out the Vote

The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean C. Logan is proud to announce a large-scale, innovative partnership to encourage voter registration and participation for the November 4, 2014 General Election. The RR/CC is collaborating with local media outlets and the Orange County Registrar of Voters to engage and inform voters through online, social media and mobile media technologies.

New and existing voters can:

  • Text the word "VOTE" to 69520 and find out where to vote.
  • Request a vote by mail ballot by Oct. 28 to vote early: http://bit.ly/1xLzk8u.
  • Visit www.SOCALvotes.com to register to vote and find helpful voter information.
  • Find election information: http://lavote.net/home/voting-elections/current-elections.

Media partners for the campaign include both English and ethnic language outlets, including CBS Radio Los Angeles, Emmis Communications (Power 106), Entravision Communications (Super Estrella 107.1 and Jose 97.5/103.1), LA 18 (Asian language programming) and Pandora Radio.



Duarte Enters into "Adopt-a-Unit" Community Partnership Program . . .

. . . with National Guard's HHT, First Squadron, 18th Cavalry in Azusa

African American news from Pasadena - Brief - City of Duarte adopt-a-unit partnership with Azusa National GuardDuarte, CA, October 14, 2014 – In the spirit of showing appreciation for the unwavering service provided by our local National Guard, the Duarte City Council has entered into a community partnership entitled the "Adopt-a-Unit program" with the California Army National Guard's Headquarters and Headquarters Troop (HHT), First Squadron, 18th Cavalry, (1-18) located in Azusa. The City Council adopted a resolution memorializing the partnership at its September 23, 2014 Council meeting.

The partnership presents many great benefits for the community at large including access to the local Commander; annual mission updates by the HHT soldiers; informational briefs for local service clubs and community organizations; community participation in the annual Armory Open House; providing displays and color guards for schools and community events; and educating the greater community about both the military and disaster preparedness planning. The City and HHT are looking forward to a long-lasting and positive relationship.
