Boxer Statement on Republican's Latest Vote to Block Unemployment Insurance for Long-Term Unemployed

Because of GOP Obstruction, More Than 275,000 Californians Can No Longer Rely on Unemployment Benefits While They Continue to Look for Work

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) spoke out on the Senate floor today about the need to renew unemployment insurance for 1.7 million Americans and 276,000 Californians who are still struggling to find work.

This afternoon, Senate Republicans once again voted to block legislation that would extend these benefits for three months, reduce the deficit by $1.2 billion, help put more people back to work, and bolster consumer demand. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that renewing unemployment insurance for one year will save 200,000 jobs.

On the floor before the vote, Senator Boxer talked about the impact on California. She also shared letters and emails she has received from constituents who have exhausted all of their unemployment benefits and are struggling to make ends meet while they continue to look for work.

"In my home state, 276,000 people have lost their extended unemployment benefits," Senator Boxer said. "What does that mean? It means they are suffering. It means their families are suffering. It means they are faced with disaster. It also means they can't go down to the corner store, they can't go fill up their car with gas. They've got all these problems and it trickles down through the community and the community is hurting . . ."

"These letters move me to tears, and I am not afraid to say it," Senator Boxer said. "Our friends wanted a short-term bill. That's what they have before them. Our friends wanted a pay-for. This is a pay-for they've agreed with. If they don't help us today – and when I say 'help us,' I mean help those who have written to all of us with their stories – they are turning their backs on the backbone of this nation."
