Southern California Funders Renew Project to Strengthen Local Nonprofits

Low-Cost Grantsmanship Workshops Now Open for Registration

The Annenberg Foundation and the California Community Foundation announced Monday that they are renewing Project Grantsmanship, a partnership with The Grantsmanship Center that strengthens the local nonprofit sector by providing subsidized grantsmanship training for community-based organizations in Los Angeles County. Launched in 2008, Project Grantsmanship has so far trained 100 local nonprofit leaders to plan more effective programs and write more compelling proposals. The project's renewal will enable another 200 local nonprofit leaders to receive this comprehensive Grantsmanship Training Program at a fraction of its cost through eight workshops: five in 2009, and three in 2010. The two foundations will underwrite up to 90 percent of the classes.

"In addition to our grantmaking, we are pleased to support nonprofits with technical assistance and professional development. We want all nonprofits in our region to be vital and strong," said Wallis Annenberg, Vice President and Trustee, Annenberg Foundation.

"Nonprofit organizations often miss viable funding opportunities because they are constantly overwhelmed with the work," said Antonia Hernández, President & CEO of the California Community Foundation. "This partnership will help nonprofit leaders identify resources, seek funding and improve program planning - a big step toward making L.A.'s nonprofit sector stronger."

"It's the collaboration with colleagues, the conversations with grantmakers, and the authenticity of producing real proposals that makes this workshop unlike any other," says Cathleen Kiritz, President of The Grantsmanship Center. "Participants leave exhilarated-with clearer purpose and powerful tools to help their community."

Five workshops will be held in 2009: March 16-20, May 18-22, August 24-28, September 28-October 2, and November 2-6 in the cities of Los Angeles and Pacoima. Three workshops will be held in Los Angeles in 2010: February 8-12, April 12-16, and June 7-11. Class size is limited to 25 people, and only two registrants per organization may enroll.
