A nostalga filled luncheon held at Brookside Clubhouse on Saturday February 7, 2009 provided a fitting kickoff for the 27th Annual Black History Parade. The event which honored this years community Grand Marshall, Ms. Lena Kennedy, also provided a tribute to past Grand Marshalls, president Barack Obama and a special tribute to long time volunteer, Roy Hayes.
The kickoff luncheon was a fitting opening for the Black History Month calendar of events. Accolades for the event were many as it marks the first time that Pasadena has honored the opening of Black History Month with the style it deserves. In this year of Obama it was appropriate that such an event was planned.
With a program that included all of the Pasadena community, the standing room only crowd was entertained by The Pasadena Chorale, Mr. Sam Walker, and essays and poems by young Judah Lacy, Miss Anaya Jumal, and others.
The parade will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009 along Fair Oaks Avenue. For more information contact the Jackie Robinson Center at 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena. The event was sponsored by AT&T, Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas Co., Wells Fargo Bank, Millers-Coors Brewing and Pasadena Water and Power.
