Approximately 100 people came together on a rainy Saturday afternoon last week to celebrate the one hundredth birthday of the Grand Old Lady of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Mrs. Marie Foster. Mrs. Foster celebrated her birthday at a local restaurant with a room full of roses, saints, friends, relatives and birthday well-wishers.
Marie Foster was born November 13, 1912. She demonstrated what makes her long life so full when she told the crowded room, over and over again, "God has been good to me."
That simple proclamation of God's goodness tells it all for Mrs. Foster. She has been a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, in Altadena, for much of her life, after arriving in California from Texas. It was at Metropolitan that she met and married Deacon emeritus, Bennie Foster. She survived Deacon Foster to continue to give service to the people of Metropolitan where she remains a model of service to the women of the church.
Relatives from as far as Texas and Arizona joined in the festivities that included many testimonials of how she helped and trained the Deaconesses of the church to the testimonial from her Pastor, Tyrone Skinner, who told of how Mother Foster provided a place for him, first Lady Trudel Skinner, and their newborn when they came to Metropolitan to serve over twenty-three years ago.
Mrs. Foster is a remarkable woman. Even at the ripe age of 100, she still handles her own business. Although she has many family and friends surrounding her, to help her and drive her places, she directs them, along with her legal and financial advisers, on how to handle her affairs. She prides herself on seeing to her daily needs, keeping her own house, and thoroughly enjoys her frequent shopping trips.
A good time was had by all at the birthday party where she kept her guest entertained.
