Statement of California Democratic Party Chairman John Burton on Mitt Romney’s Statements Dismissing Half of U.S. Population

Governor Mitt Romney's comments at a $50,000 per person fundraiser – caught on hidden camera – deriding 47 percent of Americans as people who "pay no income tax," are "dependent on government," and are incapable of taking responsibility for themselves are outrageous and reveal the real, unvarnished Mitt Romney.

Who makes up this 47 percent that Mitt Romney is talking about? Is he referring to the men and women of the U.S. military serving in combat zones who are rightfully exempt from paying federal income tax? Perhaps it's the American retiree who is collecting Social Security after paying into it for decades or is on Medicare? Or maybe college students paying for their education with federal student loans?

The Republican Party has nominated a candidate who believes that his job "is not to worry" about half of the American people.

Presidents have a responsibility to govern on behalf of all Americans. This is something that President Obama has demonstrated throughout his term.

It's clear that Mitt Romney doesn't understand the first thing about what it would take to be President and he certainly doesn't understand the majority of the American people.
