Quality of Life Center Bright Futures Scholars Honored at 2009 Graduation Celebration

Bright_Futures_ScholarsPUSD Bright Futures Scholars Graduation was a roaring success with a humanitarian twist.

Dr. Sandra E. Thomas, Dean of Scholars, rose to a packed Pasadena Hilton Grand Ballroom and announced her decision to replace the promised luncheon menu and its trimmings with a simple box lunch in order to insure that all attending Bright Futures Scholars seniors, needing financial assistance to enter college, would receive no less than $500 from combined scholarships and foundation funds. During the ceremony, high academic achievers from every Pasadena Unified School District middle and high school, proudly displayed their leadership skills and talents. Assembly Member Anthony Portantino served as Master of Ceremony and Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Honorary Dean of Scholars, gave an exciting keynote address.

Scholarships were awarded to Jacqueline Allen, Olivia Elizabeth Bellinger, Alejandra Gonzalez-Bedoy, Kyoko Harris, Briana C. Hayes, Nafasi Ferrell, Aminata Diagne, and Malvin Dube-Mathanda. Scholarship donors included: The Jason Mitchell Foundation, A.D. Thomas Scholarship fund and the Quality of Life Center Inc. Bright Futures Scholars mentors in attendance included: Congressman Adam Schiff, California State Senator Carol Liu, Assembly Member Anthony Portantino, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich , Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, Altadena Town Council Chairman Eugene "Gino" Sund, Pasadena City Council Member Chris Holden, Altadena Town Council Member Dr. Sandra E. Thomas, Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Edwin Diaz, Pasadena City Manager Michael Beck, Pasadena Chief of Police Bernard Melekian, Altadena Sheriff Captain Roosevelt Blow, Pasadena Juvenile Court Judge Phillip Soto, and Pasadena Water & Power General Manager Phyllis E. Currie.

500 plus proud parents , guest, community leaders, PUSD board members and 70 scholars representing the incoming 2010 class were on hand for the celebration and participated in the "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER" finale.
