The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Education announced today that Rose City High School has earned accreditation for grades 10-12 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for the first time in the school's history. The three-year accreditation acknowledges the quality of Rose City's educational program and affirms that the school has met rigorous, research-based standards for student learning and school performance. Rose City High School offers alternative education strategies for students who struggle in traditional high school settings.
"This report speaks volumes about the progress Rose City High School has made in its efforts to provide a high-quality alternative education," said Superintendent Edwin Diaz. "I am pleased that the WASC team recognized the hard work and commitment of teachers, administrators, students, parents/guardians, and community partners to continually improve student achievement."
WASC is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States. Graduation from an accredited high school is required by most colleges and universities and financial aid institutions. WASC accreditation ensures that students have mastered a rigorous body of knowledge.
The WASC assessment process included a visit by a team of educational experts to evaluate the school's programs and operations and the impact on student learning. The team reviewed the information collected to ensure that Rose City met criteria for standards-based student learning, effective organization and school culture and support for students' academic and personal growth.
"A diploma from Rose City High School now carries real weight and opens the doors of college and universities for our graduates," said Rose City High School Principal Irene Quinones. "Rose City students meet the same rigorous standards in an environment uniquely tailored to their behavioral needs and learning styles."
To maintain its accreditation, Rose City has committed to ongoing assessment and development of a school-wide action plan that serves as a guide for continuous improvement.
